I live two lives -- By day I work for a company, at night I work for myself.
For the past 3 years, I've been working for Spatializer Audio Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPAZ), a public company involved in new audio technologies, including so-called "3-D Audio". As Senior Product Manager, I'm in charge of our Professional Audio Products Division (which is ME). I take new products from the idea stage all the way through to production and sales. I do market research, write manuals, work with graphic designers to create the boxes and advertising, and keep the engineering and production staff on schedule. Unlike many product managers who handle a single product, I'm currently handling four(!).
My company is small and still in the "start-up" stage, which means that in addition to my product manager role, I also fix everyone's computers, go to trade shows, advise management, and created and maintain our corporate website (http://www.spatializer.com/).
When I get home, I go into my garage studio and work on my music. I've been doing ambient music and rock music for years. I'm just about to release an independent CD and start playing clubs here in L.A. I'm still after the "big record deal", which means promoting my music and band everywhere (http://www.spatializer.com/anu.html, playing clubs, schmoozing with people, and trying to stay as "connected" to the music scene as possible.
I'm fortunate that my day job affords me a high degree of responsibility and freedom, as well as a decent paycheck. My music, however, is what keeps me happy.
Whatever career you choose, realize that your undergraduate degree doesn't mean much, especially when you first start out. Your personal skills, willingness to learn, attitude, and ambition mean MUCH more. Always be on the lookout for new opportunities.
I majored in Economics at Dartmouth College ('91) and if they'd offered a minor, it would have been Electroacoustic music.
Feel free to write me at anukirk@aol.com or anu@spatializer.com.
