Transforming a Senegalese talking drum into a MIDI controller

Senegalese drums are designed to produce different sounds depending on how and where the skin is hit. I am hoping to code together a real-time spectral analysis tool that can detect each drum hit and differentiate between some of the basic hits. This code will in turn feed MIDI outputs to a sample bank such that that drum head itself becomes the control unit for a sample bank.

The challenge is to correctly classify each recorded hit, despite the inherent variation observed when humans play drums (or any instrument), and to do this with a minimum of delay time.

Feel free to contact me (jtraer@mit.edu) if you're interested in talking more about this.
